Slay the Spire 2 launched into Steam Early Access on March 5, 2026, quickly becoming one of the most successful roguelike releases with over 400,000 concurrent players. Developed in the Godot engine, the game retains the core deck-building loop of its predecessor while introducing significant mechanical layers and a modernized art style with more fluid animations.
The current Early Access version features five playable characters. Returning favorites like the Ironclad, Silent, and Defect have received reworked card pools—such as the Silent’s new "Sly" keyword, which plays cards automatically when discarded. They are joined by two newcomers: the Necrobinder, who fights alongside a persistent skeletal hand named Osty, and the Regent, an alien royal who manages a unique "Stars" resource and a "Forge" mechanic to upgrade weapons mid-combat.
A major structural addition is the implementation of Alternate Acts, where each of the three main acts now has two distinct versions, such as the "Overgrowth" or "Underdocks" for Act 1, each featuring unique enemies and bosses. The game also introduces a persistent Enchantment system that allows players to apply permanent modifiers to cards for the duration of a run, and a Quest mechanic that can span multiple acts to provide powerful rewards like a bird companion.
The headline feature of the sequel is the 4-player online co-op mode. This mode allows players to coordinate routes on a shared map, pass potions to one another, and witness teammates' combats in real-time. It introduces multiplayer-specific cards and a "Combo" system designed for cross-character synergies. While the game is currently exclusive to PC (Windows, macOS, and Linux/SteamOS), console ports for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch 2 are planned for the full 1.0 release, estimated for 2027.
